Hokkaido has just entered one of its legendary mid-January cycles. A succession of cold low-pressure systems from Siberia has brought dry, light powder snow across the southwestern region, dumping over 80cm of fresh snow in the last 48 hours.
Resorts in Niseko and Rusutsu are reporting optimal conditions. Lifts are running, and the tree runs are fully filled in. If you are planning a backcountry or guiding trip, now is the time.
Current Safety Guidelines
Due to the rapid accumulation of new snow, wind slabs have formed on northeast slopes. Avalanche safety equipment (beacon, shovel, probe) is mandatory for any backcountry touring.
- Avoid cornices.
- Travel with a partner.
- Check the daily avalanche bulletin before heading out.

This is the quotable quote of all quotes ;)
