Packing for a ski trip to Hokkaido is slightly different than preparing for European or North American slopes. The climate here is consistently colder and moisture levels are extremely low, creating the famous “dry powder” but also requiring specific gear choices.
1. Base Layers (No Cotton)
The most important rule of cold-weather layering is to avoid cotton. Cotton holds moisture and will make you cold as soon as you stop moving. Opt for high-quality merino wool or synthetic thermals.
2. High-Quality Goggles
Due to frequent snowfall, visibility can change rapidly. Bring low-light or yellow/rose lenses, or high-end photochromic goggles that adapt to changing light conditions.
3. Face Masks & Balaclavas
The cold Siberian winds can cause frostbite on exposed skin within minutes. A breathable balaclava or neck warmer is non-negotiable.
